Chapter 29

It was close to midnight by the time Martha got home. It had been a long day made frustrating by the fact that the volume of questions was not met by a similar quantity of answers. As she kicked her shoes off in the hallway, she tried to decide if she had the energy for a hot bath or just wanted to slump into bed fully clothed. The prospect of sleep was beguiling, but she sharply pushed the thought down. She was worried about her daughter Betty and needed to talk to Harry, who as always had stepped up to stop a problem escalating into a crisis. Once again, he had dropped everything to be there for Betty. She was fortunate that her daughter loved him.

Quite what would have happened without Harry she didn’t like to think. Both she and Julie were locked into the murder investigation, and Justin was away in Las Vegas at some tech festival and wasn’t due back for another couple of days. He’d offered to cut his trip short, but she wouldn’t hear of it.

She’d spoken to her daughter on the phone earlier on and again at bedtime and she’d sounded fine, but Martha’s maternal instincts were not going to let her off the hook too easily. It wasn’t that long ago Betty had been kidnapped, and she’d been in the house when her grandmother was gunned down. That would have been a lot for an adult, let alone a child.

Harry was waiting in the kitchen and handed her a cup of hot, sweet tea.

“Drink that then get to bed. Betty’s fine; she’s loving all those FaceTime calls. Julie’s promised her ice cream in the park next weekend. So, don’t worry about us, everything’s under control.”

She slapped her head. “Hang on a minute, Harry, I’ve only gone and left a couple of files on the front seat. I need to go and get them.”

Even as Harry’s lips moved to say he would go, she was off, out of the front door and walking left towards Rosendale Road, where she’d found a parking spot three hundred meters down. A night bus barrelled past, but it seemed otherwise quiet.

She was approaching her car when a voice called her name. It belonged to a man sitting in the passenger seat of a dark-coloured panel van. “Martha, is that you? I’m so pleased to see you.”

She looked down and saw a stranger, at which point her training with Harry kicked in: check your surroundings. She noted the driver’s seat was empty, which meant the driver was out of the car.

It was obviously a trap, but Martha’s subconscious was already calling the shots. It told her to find the driver. The passenger gave the game away when he couldn’t stop himself looking at a spot immediately behind Martha’s left shoulder.

That was threat number one. What about the second threat, the passenger? He was still sitting in the car, albeit reaching for the door handle. He obviously intended to get out and join the party, but he was about to find out that he had already left it too late.
